Supporting Communities

Company Overview

Supporting Communities is a dedicated charity focused on meeting the needs of at-risk individuals, young people, and their families. Our guiding principle is “Early intervention is prevention,” emphasising the importance of timely support for all young people. Our mission is to relieve the burdens of poverty, enhance mental health and well-being, and reduce the number of at-risk individuals, young people and their families entering local authority services. Committed to establishing and sustaining high-quality youth and family support, we aim to build the resilience of families and create opportunities for young people to thrive.

Youth Support

Our Youth Support Services offer bespoke 1-1 interventions for young people aged 11-19 (up to age 25 for SEND) to encourage, inspire and promote behavioural management, social and emotional support, and decision-making strategies for individuals to reach their full potential. We strive for young people to excel academically, socially, and personally whilst considering contextual safeguarding factors to deliver support in the appropriate environments best suited to the young persons' needs. This support will lie in the community or educational setting.

Family Support

Our Family Support Services cater to children aged 0-11 and their parents/guardians, offering personalised assistance through 1:1 or group sessions in community or educational settings. Embracing a holistic approach, we tackle challenges including mental health, parenting struggles, domestic abuse, and financial hardships. Additionally, we conduct home welfare checks and provide professional communication support, along with aiding in essential paperwork. With our Think Child, Think Parent, Think Family approach, we promptly identify at-risk families and deliver tailored support.

Community Support

Our community support team operates various programmes, including detached youth work, mobile youth provision, and outreach initiatives. These efforts aim to engage with young people where they are, creating positive relationships and providing guidance. Additionally, we deliver group sessions designed to support individuals at risk, addressing concerns such as poverty, health issues, social challenges, crime prevention, and overall well-being. Our goal is to create safe spaces within the community where people feel welcomed, supported and offer pathways of support when needed.

Family Support Case Study 2

The referral came from the local authorities to address family relationship breakdowns. Upon receiving the referral, it was evident that the young person (YP) was struggling with mental health issues and relationship challenges. Building a positive rapport with the YP took time, as they had difficulty trusting and communicating. We worked both in the school setting and the community. Once the YP felt comfortable speaking with me, I gained a better understanding of the struggles and contributing factors affecting their social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH). I supported the YP in seeking clinical support and arranged mediation sessions to help repair broken relationships. In the meantime, I provided the YP with tools and strategies to support their well-being. We continue to meet weekly, and the YP has expressed that they look forward to these sessions.

Family Support Case Study

The referral was made by a family member as they were concerned about their son’s behaviour in school. Upon receiving the referral, it was evident that the young person (YP) faced several challenges within the academic setting. These difficulties not only impacted the YP’s ability to access education but also affected peers and teachers in the classroom. To address this, the YP was placed on a part-time timetable, starting with an hour and a half per day, to ensure that their learning time in school was positive. The school supported this part-time timetable, and I provided tools and strategies to facilitate the YP’s participation in the classroom without further disrupting their education. Initially, there were concerns about the YP’s behaviour. However, after speaking with the YP and understanding the difficulties they faced, it became clear that additional Special Educational Needs (SEN) support was necessary. The YP felt heard and understood, and they were made aware of the tools and aids available to help them regulate their behaviour. Through collaborative support and communication between myself and the school, the YP successfully transitioned back to a full timetable over an eight-week period.
